Right after my bubble bath

I'm not naive enough to think that being a stay-at-home mom means I will have time for bubble baths, eating bon bons, and making pies for my husband, but I did figure that I would get a little more done than has actually been the case. If I had done the math, maybe I would have made the realization sooner. 8-12 feedings a day x 10-20 minutes a side x 2 sides per feeding. That means up to 8 hours of nursing each day (not including burping, baby falling asleep while nursing, diaper changes, etc). A full time job. I am not complaining. This IS what I signed up for. I couldn't be happier to have little Eliza with us. My question is this: How do you maximize your time (or at least get something done) as a stay-at-home mom?

If I were to put 'get dressed' and 'brush teeth' on my To Do list I would feel rather productive on most days, but usually I'm a little more ambitious. Right now, I am reading several books which I have strategically placed at all the nursing hot spots in the house. What are your ideas for getting things done while meeting baby's needs?

As with most things, I'm sure I will become more productive as time goes on and sleep increases. I guess I'm getting more efficient already, as I did type this entire post one-handed while nursing Eliza. Maybe I'll get to the pies after all!

To be honest? Don’t worry about getting anything done! Of course there are things that MUST get done, but even then it’s sometimes impossible when your baby is so small. You probably hear this all the time but it’s really true.. Enjoy your newborn, because they don’t stay that little forever! She’s beautiful!

One-handed post typing–that’s pretty amazing! Four kids later I still don’t have any suggestions as to how to be more productive. In fact, instead of learning how to be more productive I just learned to make my to-do list at the end of the day and write down all the things I did (brushing teeth and getting dressed usually made it) just to help me feel better about myself.

At the very least, I do hope you find time for that bubble bath!

If you are getting dressed, I would say that you are doing great! I will echo what was said above, enjoy every minute! Take pride in the small tasks that you can get done. I think I became pretty good at becoming one-handed for the things that HAD to get done. I really don’t remember what I did!

Don’t worry, it gets easier! For now just enjoy it, I think the forced break is good for you! Before you know it you will be walking around while nursing while taking care of things (sounds nuts, but you will reach this point I promise!). I remember the early months with our first . . . . I watched more CNN/BBC than any one person should in a lifetime.

For now consider it a major accomplishment if you make it through a day and somehow manage to brush your teeth and get dressed. And if you somehow sqeeze in time for a meal, day well done! Enjoy it. . . . they sure get big fast. Before you know it you will be nusing #2 with #1 doing gymnastics all over you.

When I was pregnant with Jay I asked a mom who had a 3 month old baby if she ever got bored sitting at home all day. She responded with “no, I try to do one thing everyday”. I just said to myself “One thing? Man your life really is boring! What the crap do you do all day?” And then I had Jay. Brushing my teeth and showering are still on my to do list and he’s 2.

Yeah, for these first few months just worry about the basics. Andrew had to sometimes force me to take a nap when Kate was sleeping. I would get so distracted with laundry, cooking, etc. But without sleep, I would have gone insane. I always tried to shower and brush every day, but sometimes it didn’t happen. It was a real bonus when it did, though. :) Smelling like sour milk wasn’t one of my favorite things.

Things definitely get easier, though, when the baby starts sleeping a little longer. And it will happen sooner than you think. You’re doing great!
