Our annual tradition says it's about time
To sum up our year in a cute little rhyme.
This year is no different than those of the past,
"Must it be a poem?" by Mike it is asked.
You know the answer and you've just begun.
I just think that writing in verse is so fun!
March 4th is the day that stands out from the rest --
The birth of Eliza was simply the best.
With rolls on her thighs and blonde hair on her head,
Nine pounds and eight ounces was what the scale said!
She came a week late, but we didn't mind,
When Doc said "induce," we kindly declined.
If you want the story of birth with detail,
A post on our blog lays out the whole tale.
She's growing up fast -- each day's something new;
We marvel at all the neat tricks she can do.
She crawls like the wind -- in a flash she is gone.
She pulls herself up and walks 'round holding on.
With eight little teeth in her big toothy grin
She eats about anything that you put in.
We wish that you all lived close by and could see
The fun little girl she's turned out to be!
Our search for a law school took us kind of far.
Some may be wondering just where we are.
The mid-Western cornfields, way out on the plain
At U of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
To leave friends in Utah was hard, you might guess,
Dear friends and fond mem'ries make us feel so blessed.
Good neighbors and others at work, church and school –
It will be hard to find new friends as cool.
The best thing 'bout coming out to Illinois
Is not endless fields of corn and of soy.
The best part's that houses are cheaper by far.
We found one for us that has room for the car!
Three bedrooms, one bathroom, attached garage, too,
With front and back yards, there's plenty to do!
It's not really huge, but for us it's just right.
If you are in town, please stop by for the night!
Mike liked his classes and did very well
Still spent time at home -- as a dad he is swell!
Most times you can find him down on the ground
Eliciting giggles and new little sounds.
Eliza's excited to see him each day
She knows he's a big kid who just likes to play.
Since last New Year's letter, I have retired
I'm home with the baby, just as desired.
I'm still just as busy as I was before,
Just doing a work I enjoy so much more.
Next month will be two years since Lily was born;
We still miss her dearly but try not to mourn.
We know that she's happy in heaven above
And until we're together we send her our love.
The light of the gospel and love of the Lord
Have blessed us more richly than we can record.
We know that God lives and takes care of us all
And helps us get up when we trip or we fall.
He guides us along a less treacherous way
So we can be with Him in some future day.
We're glad for your friendship; to us it means much.
Please drop us a line so that we stay in touch!
Or stop by our blog the whole new year through
To read our adventures and find out what's new.
We must close our poem and bid you farewell.
We love you and miss you and hope you are well!

YAY! I have been waiting for your new poem... you are so much better at words than I am, and I love reading your blog!
Wow, that was really good! I had no idea that you could do that. Neat! Thanks for the update!
Wow--I am impressed at your poem writing ability! Very fun to read. :)
Fabulous as always :)
Loved it!!
I've actually been looking forward to this for some time! You guys are quite brilliant. Here's my attempt:
The Hodnetts are special and kind and our friends, b-l and c-l are consonant blends.
In competition, Eliza would win the prize,
for compared with Allison, she is twice the size.
We miss all the exercise we used to do.
Ana's hamster just died; her name was Boo.
We're a little bit jealous that you own a house.
We have the same friend, named Nancy Krause.
Thank you, thank you.
We really do miss you guys!!! Give Eliza a big kiss for us.
Wow, Mandy! That was touching. The line about consonant blends was especially moving.
