Surgery is Over!

Surgery went well and Eliza was great through it all!

We were granted the miracle of having Eliza sleep through the night. She slept from 9 pm to 5:15 am! It was amazing! I got up a few times in the night to make sure she was still breathing. We kept her distracted enough in our preparations to get out the door at 5:45, that she didn't even get upset about not being fed.

We were only in the waiting room a few minutes before we got to take Eliza back and get her suited up in her little gown. She was definitely showing signs of tiredness, but thankfully wasn't fussy.

The purple dots over her eyes are to show which part of her body is being operated on. You never can trust that the ophthalmologist won't all of the sudden go after her ankle or liver. Seriously though, if she was only having one eye operated on, I would want them to be sure it was the right one (or the correct one, rather).

She was so entranced by the cartoons playing on the Disney channel, that she barely noticed the new teddy bear they gave her.

After a little while of sitting, she wanted to walk around and explore.

The nurse gave Eliza some Tylenol beforehand to ease the pain she may feel after the surgery. I don't think we've ever given her Tylenol before, but she seemed to like it (either than or she was just really hungry), because afterward, she kept signing for "more." Maybe grape flavor is her favorite.

The surgery went really quickly! From the time they took her away until the time they brought her back was only 20 minutes. When she came back, she was still asleep. She woke up less than 10 minutes later. She just cried for a second, but as soon as I picked her up she was fine. We were really glad because the nurse had warned us that babies will often be inconsolable for a while after they wake up. Eliza was eager to finally get some milk after this whole ordeal.

Even though Mike thought I was a bit silly, I took some pictures of Eliza when they first brought her back, before she woke up. You can hardly tell here, but she has iodine dripping from her eye. She also has a little blood around her eye. She has been bleeding a little where she normally has eye goop draining, which is normal. She has also been having a bloody, runny nose from having some tubes up there.

Once she could bear the separation from her food source for a few minutes, we put her jammies and coat back on and headed for home! We were home a little after 9am. Eliza was sound asleep in the car. She is usually non-transferable, but she transferred straight into her crib without a peep.

Doctor's orders include no driving, operating heavy machinery, making major decisions, or signing legal documents in the next 24 hours, so I'm going to keep an extra close eye on her so she doesn't pull a fast one on me. She also gets the whole day off work. So if you come over and see dishes in our sink, that's why. Eliza's off duty.

Hopefully Eliza is among the 90% who are fixed after this procedure. The doctor prescribed some eye drops that should keep the ducts all clear while she is healing. If they scar closed, she'll have to go through it again.
