I Love Being Pregnant

I really love being pregnant. My husband can attest that I say so nearly every night as I look at my bulging belly in the mirror. I love feeling wiggles and squirms and even kicks and jabs. I love imagining what the little person inside me looks like. I love how my body grows to make room for the new life inside me. I love gaining weight for my baby. I love my round, firm belly. I love that my husband loves my pregnant body. I love that he tells me so. I love bringing another little person into this world. I love being a part of a miracle.

Now this isn't to say that I always feel great, look cute, or have tons of energy when I'm pregnant, because that is definitely not always the case.

When I was pregnant with Lily, our first daughter (stillborn with trisomy-18), I still wore rose-colored pregnancy glasses. I'm sure I whined about feeling sick and tired and felt entitled to bemoan my condition. I'm sure I felt valiant for being willing to endure physical hardships for 9 months. After all, I figured that my misery would end with a sweet baby to take home.

Then the rose-colored glasses were torn away from my eyes. My naivete was replaced with bitter experience. I would have given anything to throw up every day or be stuck in bed for months if it meant that my baby was back, safe inside me and I could carry her to term, then take her home. For months after losing Lily, I would cringe as I heard other women complain about the agonies of pregnancy (or how terrible their children were). It took me a while to be able to step away, relax, and realize that because our experiences differed so did our perspectives on pregnancy.

I have since been touched by the experiences of many other couples who have lost children or who struggle through the devastations of infertility. When I think of how they long to be in my position, suddenly my back doesn't hurt so bad. What seems like a burden becomes a blessing. My predicament becomes a privilege.

To everyone who asks how I am feeling (I get that a lot these days :) ), the one-word answer is "great."

If you've read through all my musings, then you definitely deserve some pictures of this belly that I'm loving so much!

Thanks for the reminder that I need to watch my attitude. It seems like when we're trying for a baby and having miscarriage after miscarriage life can seem a little cruel, but amidst the puking and the passing out and the endless exhaustion I've been feeling a little sorry for myself lately. I appreciate your good example and the reminder that this really is an amazing and wonderful time!
And you look GREAT!!

You do look great! You posts are always so profound and wonderful. They always cause me to stop, rethink what I am thinking, and focus on the most important things...

Can you please move closer so you can hit me over the head with a stick each day? Pretty please??

Thank you! Sometimes I need to be reminded that pregnancy is wonderful and beautiful! I love talking to my little girl inside of me and know that she hears me . . . . Special moments. . . .

I'm so glad you're loving being pregnant. I'm trying to, too...harder because of our words!

And of course, that was meant to say YOUR words. Pregnancy brain strikes again. What a gift though, right? :)

Hot mama! Hooray for miracles... especially the baby kind. Experience and hardship give perspective to the discomforts. Labor pain is nothing compared to heart ache.
