Dog Days

While our friends were out of town during the month of August, we took care of their dog Max.  We had taken care of him here and there, but never for this long.  I have never had a dog before and would never consider myself a "dog person," but I managed and by the end of taking care of Max, I kind of enjoyed it.

At first the kids (especially Caleb) would freak out when we went over to take care of Max.  Eliza would talk it up in the car, but when we got there it was "Hold me mom!  Hold me!" non-stop.  Caleb would just scream in terror.

For the first week and a half I was on my own since Mike was in South Dakota.  Due to some drama (warnings from animal control, etc), we moved Max to our house (well, yard and garage) when Mike got home.  Having Max at our house allowed the kids to really get used to him and start to love him.  Now that he was on her turf, Eliza was brave and bold.  She always wanted to go check on Max and make sure he had food.  Eliza loved taking him on walks and giving him treats.  Somewhere in there Caleb warmed up to him too.  Caleb would share his food with Max and crawl around with him without being afraid.

The kids were sad when Max had to go home.  Eliza still talks about him coming back.  I imagine we'll have a dog someday (Mike really wants one), but we'll wait until we have more space and live somewhere that a dog can live outside year-round.

I don't have any "before" pictures to show you of the kids and Max, but here are a few "after" shots once they decided to be friends:

Caleb shared his birthday cake with his new friend Max.

Max was friendly with the kids, too. (This was taken after eating birthday cake.  Caleb usually wears a shirt, I promise.)
It looks like Eliza is casting a spell on Max, but I think she just dropped a treat for him.

Eliza was super diligent at filling Max's food dish.
