Since the month-counting posts were getting a little outrageous, I decided after age 4 (which Eliza has conveniently reached) I will just do a post every couple months.
For the record, though, this would be 49 and 50 months :)
Eliza is friendly. She loves playing with the 6-year-old twin boys who live next door. Together with Caleb, they dig in the dirt, ride bikes, cook in the play kitchen, build with trains and blocks, and play with magnetic dolls. She asked us why our neighbors don't go to our church. She has since invited them.
Eliza's teacher at church always tells me that Eliza is very good in class, that she sits reverently and participates well. Mike or I have substituted for her class the past several weeks and when we are there she is more clingy.
Eliza really likes to learn. She likes to write things for us when we dictate letter by letter for her. She likes to know the meaning of new words. Sometimes that really draws out the time we spend for family scripture reading.
Eliza sometimes has a hard time hearing when she is given directives. It isn't a problem with her ears (she could hear "ice cream" or "treat" whispered in a construction site). She has her own agenda for when and how she wants to comply. When she does respond, "Why?" is always the first thing out of her mouth. I've tried to preempt everything with a reason, but I still get the knee-jerk "Why?", which can drive me nuts if I'm not feeling super patient! I am fine with "why"s of curiosity and interest in learning. It's the "why"s that question directives that get to me.
When I see Eliza's stubbornness she totally reminds me of myself. Just the other day she jumped off the stage at church (after I had told her not to). She limped away and I asked her if she got hurt. "No," she said. Then she sat on the ground massaging her foot. "Did you hurt your foot?" I asked her. "No. I just like to rub my foot."
