First Party

We got a calling on our first Sunday in Quetzaltenango! We were in our married student ward in Provo for 4 months and never got callings, so we were extra excited. We are both ward missionaries. We are the only ones! Our ward just got a ward mission leader about a month ago and we share the full-time elders with another ward. We live near several families who have been less-active in the church, but have been receptive to visits, so the bishop would like us to focus on them. We went with the bishop to have a family home evening with one of the families last week. We had a fun time. On Wednesday we had a “Noche de Hermanamiento” (Fellowship Night) at our place. We invited a few active and a few less-active families to come. We wandered around to their houses since most people don’t have phones. I made some cute little invitations out of construction paper, at Mike’s request. I have been trying to figure out what in the world to make for refreshments ever since we decided to host the festivities. I have done lots of experimenting (see Chef Esteph). I finally ended up with some dense banana cake and some slightly over-cooked, bittersweet brownies. Everyone was kind and complimentary. Since it was food they aren’t used to, they probably just figured that was how it was supposed to be. We were very pleased with how everything turned out. We had 19 people come and half of them haven’t been to church in ages. Everyone enjoyed chatting and catching up. It really was a fellowshipping night. We had a short lesson given by a ward member and then we played “Zip, Bong” and “Telephone Charades.” Everyone had a good time! It is especially exciting for us to be able to fit more than two guests in our house at the same time!
