Pumpkins: Business for Preschoolers
After pondering the 33 pumpkins that were taking up the floor of our garage, Mike and I came up with a plan. A little business plan. We would set up a little pumpkin stand on the corner and let the kids sell pumpkins. We would have a Family Home Evening lesson about paying tithing, then we would let the kids use the money to buy bike helmets. Eliza asks for a bike helmet every time we are in Target. "But Mom, I need a helmet like Daddy so I can be safe!" We have planned to get them eventually, but just haven't yet since the kids mostly just ride in the garage. What a great chance for the kids to earn their own money to be able to get something they have been longing for!
Four days after getting the pumpkins I finally had the baby. We hadn't done the pumpkin stand yet and the garage was still covered with pumpkins. The day before Mike's mom was leaving I decided if we were going to do this, I'd better get to it. I am not Super Mom enough to take 3 kids by myself to sell pumpkins on a busy street corner a week after having a baby (or any other time for that matter). I definitely needed another adult with me (mostly so I wouldn't feel completely silly) and I knew that Mike wouldn't have time before Halloween.
The kids colored their own pumpkin signs before their nap, then I painted the others during their nap. When they woke up we put them in their Halloween costumes and loaded them in the car (along with about 25 of the pumpkins).
We felt pretty silly as we pulled over and started unloading our wares. The feeling only grew as we sat there waving our signs for 30 minutes before we had our first customer.
For a while the kids held their signs and waved to cars, but that soon got old, so the kids played in the grass behind our stand and built "fires" with sticks they collected. They would come over to help each customer choose his or her pumpkins, then head back to their imaginative outdoor play.
We stayed out from 4:30 to about 6:30. We sold 18 pumpkins and came home with $49. Not bad if you ask me. Too bad we won't be here next year to make Pumpkins from Oz a tradition.

Fun. Paul used to have a pumpkin patch and sell pumpkins when he was a kid. It's something he wants to resurrect when our kids are older.
