Easter Dress and Tie
As I mentioned in my Easter post, I made Eliza and Caleb a matching dress and tie, respectively. I made them from a tablecloth that my mom had made for us. One time when she was visiting, she found some fabric that she thought matched our kitchen well, so she bought 2 yards and finished the edges. It turned out just barely wide enough for the table. After having it on the table for a few days, we realized that our kids aren't really tablecloth trained (one tug makes a big mess), so we put it away. Well, the fabric was cute, so I decided it was time for it to come out of the cupboard!
I used the same pattern I used for the dresses for Derrick's wedding, only I didn't put tulle on the bottom of the underskirt. I did the tie a little different than I've done ties in the past and I am pleased with how it turned out. I need to make some more!
Pillowcase Nightgown
When it started to get warm, I realized that Eliza didn't have any summer pajamas. I decided to make her some nightgowns. For my first one, I used a pillowcase that I bought at a yard sale for fifty cents a couple years ago because I thought the fabric would be cute to make something for Eliza. I found a pattern online for a nightgown with sleeves, which is what I wanted. The thin ruffle at the bottom was my own touch. Eliza loves her new nightgown! When I look at it I am still amazed that all the fabric came from just a regular pillowcase.
Bow Hanger
I've been meaning to make some sort of hanger/display for Eliza's bows for a while. One day a few weeks ago I saw the pile of bows on the closet shelf and decided "today is the day." I did it that morning from start to finish and thought "why didn't I do that sooner?"
I sewed some fabric scraps together, then added some decorative stitching to the seam. I wrapped the fabric around a corkboard (that I bought at a yard sale last year for this very purpose) so that in went onto the back about 2 inches. I used our light duty staple gun to staple the fabric to the back side. I cut strips of ribbon and stapled them to the back like I did with the fabric. I added a ribbon to hang it with, sewed a simple bow to the center of the hanging ribbon and called it done. We loaded it up with Eliza's bow stash. Her bow stash keeps growing with beautiful big bows, thanks to my talented friend Kim.
Cap and Gown
My friend Staci was expecting her first baby right around the time that she was graduating with her Master's and her husband was graduating from law school. She commissioned me to make a baby-sized cap and gown. She paid me in Cadbury Creme Eggs. Lovely!

Those are awesome projects! What a great skill to have. I recycled an old zip up skirt I had into a dress for my daughter. It took less than an hour since the zipper was already there - just had to make a few cuts and put on capped sleeves. It's so easy to find patterns using recycled clothes, fabric, etc. Did you have a pattern for Caleb's tie, or did you just make one up? I love that it matches Eliza's dress!
Can you teach me how to make a bow hanger? Scarlett's bows are currently all over the place, including getting smushed in a bathroom drawer. :( Miss you guys!
Sarah, I did make the pattern for Caleb's tie. I took apart a store-bought one and figured out how to do it. Right now the pattern is chicken scratch that only I can understand, but eventually I'll share it.
Becca, I'd love to show you how to do the bow holder. You can use some of the scraps you have from Scarlett's quilt so it coordinates with her room!
