Camping at Weldon Springs

My friend Julie asked me to go with her to take the Young Women (girls 12-18) at church winter camping since none of the other leaders thought it sounded like very much fun.  We had to postpone our original February date due to sickness and then settled on a date in early March.  At the last minute none of the girls could (or wanted to) go.  Julie and I were excited about camping and already had plans in place, so we decided to bring our families instead (they have 3 cute little boys).  We had a great time!

We drove about an hour to Weldon Springs, a campground/recreation area which is top-rated nationally.  After checking out the small, not-very-private car camping spots, we opted for the "primitive" camping spots, which basically just means you can't pull your car right up.  We had to hike in about a quarter mile with our things (which took several trips by each grown up).  It was nice to be the only ones in the area.

For dinner we had pizza sandwiches that we made with our pie-iron and the most delicious dutch oven spaghetti that Julie made.  Spaghetti is usually just an okay, but not delicious food for me.  Julie made the most delicious baked spaghetti ever.  I'm getting hungry just thinking about it.

These two little ones became good friends.  Notice his arm is around her.  An older man (about 2 years older), he was quite a little gentleman.

It took a while to get the kids to settle down and go to sleep.  That is always the hardest part of camping for us.  Caleb was a little sick, so he didn't sleep very well (and neither did Mike, who was on Caleb-duty all night).  He (Caleb) was grumpy and clingy in the morning.

For breakfast we had oranges, strawberries and Julie's yummy breakfast burritos.  We also had delicious roasted Starbursts, though some folks couldn't wait for the roasting and just had them cold.

In the morning we went on a little hike with Mary (the little white dog).

Eliza learned about lots of "boy" things like sword fighting with sticks and shooting a slingshot.

In the morning we played on the fun playground.

The daddies rolled down the big sledding hill with the kiddos.  It was a little too much spinning around for Mike.  He was nauseous for the rest of the day because of it.

When we got back to the car, Caleb decided he would rather walk down the road instead. Don't worry, there weren't any cars and we didn't let him go any further that this.

No picture, but needs to be documented: Eliza learned to go wee wee like a mountain woman, which was pretty exciting.
